Canadian skip Rachel Homan achieved a historic win on Sunday as her team from Ottawa emerged victorious with an 8-2 score against Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni in the CO-OP Tour Challenge final held in Nisku, Alberta. This victory marked Homan’s 19th Grand Slam title, surpassing Kevin Martin from Alberta as the skip with the most titles across both divisions. Homan, who hails from nearby Beaumont, Alberta, secured the win in front of a supportive crowd comprising family, friends, and fans.
Rachel Homan, along with her teammates Tracy Fleury, Emma Miskew, and Sarah Wilkes, earned a prize of $34,500 for their triumph. This final encounter marked the ninth time that Homan and Tirinzoni faced each other in a Grand Slam women’s final, with Homan leading the head-to-head record 7-2. The victory was a significant moment for Homan, who expressed her gratitude for achieving this milestone in front of her loved ones.
In the final match, Homan took an early lead by scoring four points in the first end, eventually securing a 5-2 advantage after four ends. She solidified her win by stealing one point in the fifth end and two points in the sixth. On the men’s side, Bruce Mouat of Scotland claimed victory by defeating Matt Dunstone of Winnipeg, Manitoba, with a score of 5-2, earning Mouat his 11th Grand Slam title. The match was a highly anticipated rematch of the 2016 world junior final, where Dunstone claimed bronze for Canada and Mouat secured gold for Scotland.
