“Family Fights for Homecoming of Ailing Son”

Date:

Christian Herridge, a 50-year-old man, is facing numerous health challenges, including schizophrenia, a heart condition, and osteoporosis. In addition to these ailments, he is currently undergoing a recovery process to relearn basic motor skills and speech due to recent brain damage. Despite spending over 16 months in the hospital, Christian is determined to return to his parents’ home in Mahone Bay, N.S.

Ruth Herridge, Christian’s mother, has been advocating for his discharge from the hospital to facilitate his transition back home. However, the process is proving to be complex. The family is seeking assistance to modify their home to better accommodate Christian’s special needs. While they have installed a chair lift with the help of fundraisers, they find it inadequate for their small residence and are looking to add a first-floor bedroom for easier access.

Ruth applied for financial aid from the Nova Scotia Department of Growth and Development but was informed that their savings exceed the allowable limit for home repair assistance. Despite living on a modest income, including social assistance payments and pension funds, Ruth emphasized that the family’s savings are intended for Christian’s future needs.

The province aims to support patients in moving back home for recovery once deemed safe. Ruth advocates for more financial resources to assist families in facilitating this transition and avoiding prolonged hospital stays. While the province offers some home care services and disability aids, the Herridge family is exploring additional avenues for support.

Despite the challenges, the family is committed to ensuring Christian’s well-being and a smooth transition back home. Ruth expressed gratitude for the individuals willing to help them navigate this process and emphasized their determination to provide a safe and supportive environment for Christian.

As they continue to work towards Christian’s homecoming, the family is prepared to welcome him back without major renovations to prevent him from being placed in a nursing home. Ruth remains optimistic about the support they have received and their ability to ensure Christian’s quality of life in their home environment.
