In Toronto, Canadian swimmers Josh Liendo and Ilya Kharun showcased outstanding performances at the swimming World Cup event. Liendo clinched the gold in the men’s 100m freestyle, setting a new Canadian record of 45.30 seconds. Kharun secured victory in the 200m butterfly event. Kharun triumphed in the 200m butterfly with a time of 1:49.71, surpassing Alberto Razzetti of Italy and Mitchell Schott of the United States. Kharun described his performance as smooth and successful, crediting the supportive crowd for his motivation.
Liendo’s exceptional showing included setting a short-course world record in the men’s 100m butterfly and claiming a second gold medal in the 50m freestyle event. Kharun earned $10,000 US for his three consecutive wins in the 200m butterfly across the World Cup circuit, finishing second to Liendo in the 100m butterfly.
In the men’s 200m individual medley, Finlay Knox from Okotoks, Alta., secured third place. Another notable achievement was seen in the women’s 200m freestyle, where Australian swimmer Mollie O’Callaghan set a new world record with a time of 1:49.36.
Mary-Sophie Harvey from Trois-Rivières, Que., achieved a personal best by finishing second in the women’s 400m individual medley, expressing her delight with the race and her surprising silver medal win in Toronto.
