“Israeli Raid in Southern Syria Leads to 13 Fatalities”

Date:

Israeli forces conducted a raid in a village in southern Syria, leading to a confrontation with residents that resulted in at least 13 fatalities, as reported by Syrian officials. The Syrian Foreign Ministry labeled the incident as a “horrific massacre,” emphasizing the presence of women and children among the deceased.

According to the Syrian state news agency SANA, the Israeli forces entered Beit Jin village with the intention of apprehending local men but resorted to heavy gunfire when faced with opposition from residents. Subsequently, numerous families evacuated the area.

Israel stated that the operation was aimed at capturing suspects affiliated with the Jamaa Islamiya militant group in Beit Jin, who were allegedly planning attacks involving improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and rockets targeting Israel. Allegedly, other militants engaged the troops, resulting in six injuries. In response, Israeli forces utilized air support and returned fire. Although Israel claimed to have apprehended all suspects and eliminated several militants, no evidence was provided to substantiate these claims.

A local official, Walid Okasha, asserted that the casualties were civilians, including a man, his wife, two children, his brother, and another man who had recently married. Describing the situation as dire, Okasha highlighted the tragic loss of innocent lives.

Firas Daher, a resident of Beit Jin, recounted that the troops advanced into the village at 3 a.m. local time and encountered minimal resistance with light weaponry. Drones, helicopters, and heavy machine gun fire were employed by the troops, resulting in casualties whenever movement was detected within the village.

Israeli forces have maintained control over a portion of southern Syria following the fall of former Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. This area, previously designated as a UN-patrolled buffer zone under a 1974 agreement, has witnessed recurrent Israeli military operations targeting suspected militants. Additionally, Israel has conducted numerous airstrikes on Syrian military installations and advocated for a demilitarized zone south of Damascus.

Previous Israeli raids in Syrian villages have often been met with armed resistance from local inhabitants. Instances in Nawa and Koayiah saw confrontations between residents and Israeli troops, leading to casualties on both sides. Furthermore, Israeli authorities have faced criticism for their actions in the region, with accusations of violating Syria’s sovereignty.

Syria has condemned Israeli incursions as breaches of its territorial integrity, urging urgent intervention from the international community to curtail such actions. Concerns persist that ongoing conflicts in the region could jeopardize the fragile ceasefire in Gaza and escalate tensions further.

Recent strikes by Israel in southern Lebanon have targeted Hezbollah positions, allegedly to prevent the group’s rearmament post a previous conflict. These actions have drawn condemnation from the United Nations, with reports indicating civilian casualties. Efforts to negotiate a security deal between Syrian and Israeli officials have stalled, impacting stability along the border.

The United Nations, through its Deputy Special Envoy for Syria, expressed strong disapproval of Israel’s activities in Syria, characterizing them as destabilizing and unacceptable violations of sovereignty. Despite past diplomatic discussions, security negotiations between Syrian and Israeli representatives have been halted since September.
