A significant portion of the residents in Calgary and Edmonton are expressing dissatisfaction with the rapid population growth taking place in Alberta. Recent estimates from Statistics Canada indicate that Alberta’s population has exceeded five million as of July 1, with projections suggesting a potential increase of around two million over the next 25 years.
A survey conducted by Janet Brown Opinion Research for CBC News involved 1,000 residents in each city, gauging their views on the current pace of population growth. The majority of respondents in both Calgary and Edmonton expressed concerns about the speed of growth, with 64% in Calgary and 62% in Edmonton feeling that the pace is too fast.
In terms of personal impacts, 51% of respondents in Calgary and 56% in Edmonton viewed the effects of recent population growth as negative. Particularly, individuals in the 25 to 45 age group, those facing financial challenges, and those with lower levels of education were more likely to be troubled by the growth trajectory.
Residents like Pearl Parchem in Calgary voiced frustrations about increased wait times for health services and difficulties finding doctors due to the population surge. Marrisa Atkinson highlighted challenges in accessing recreation facilities and activities amidst the growing population, citing issues like limited availability for swimming lessons and lack of parking at events.
The rapid growth has also become a central theme in municipal campaigns, with candidates in both cities acknowledging the importance of managing growth effectively. There is a notable connection between concerns about growth and political affiliations, with right-leaning individuals showing more unease and tending to support candidates aligned with their views.
As the municipal elections approach, the impact of growth and related issues such as infrastructure, housing, and affordability are expected to influence voter decisions. The undecided voter base in Calgary and Edmonton is substantial, with many looking for candidates who offer viable solutions to address the challenges associated with rapid population growth.
