Two right-leaning contenders were in a close race in Honduras’s presidential election, with approximately 55% of polling stations reporting their votes early Monday, according to initial and incomplete results. The election occurred shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump interfered in the tight race by endorsing one candidate and promising to pardon a former president.
The National Electoral Council reported that Nasry (Tito) Asfura from the National Party had around 40% of the vote in the initial tally, while Salvador Nasralla of the conservative Liberal Party trailed closely with about 39.78%. Rixi Moncada of the democratic socialist LIBRE Party was behind with 19.49%.
Both Asfura and Nasralla refrained from claiming victory, noting it was still early in the counting process. Despite initial excitement at their respective campaign headquarters, the streets of Tegucigalpa, the capital city, remained relatively calm as the vote count progressed slowly.
Asfura, a 67-year-old former mayor of Tegucigalpa who received Trump’s endorsement, campaigned as a practical leader highlighting his successful infrastructure projects. In contrast, Nasralla, a 72-year-old sportscaster, emphasized his cross-party collaborations over the years, including running alongside the current president in the previous election.
Upon the release of preliminary results late Sunday, Nasralla acknowledged the tight race and expressed optimism that the remaining votes would work in his favor. He sought to leverage Trump’s involvement to reinforce his outsider image, despite this being his fourth presidential bid.
Trump’s endorsement of Asfura on Friday aimed to address drug trafficking concerns and emphasized the potential partnership for countering this issue. Trump also created a stir by announcing a pardon for former president Juan Orlando Hernández, who was serving a lengthy sentence in the U.S. for aiding drug traffickers.
The decision to pardon Hernández drew criticism, especially from Democrats, as it contradicted efforts to combat drug trafficking. The move was seen as a contentious intervention in the Honduran political landscape, raising concerns among various stakeholders.
