“Trump Declares Blockade on Venezuela’s Oil Tankers”

Date:

President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday the initiation of a blockade on all “sanctioned oil tankers” traveling to Venezuela, intensifying pressure on the country’s leader, Nicolás Maduro. This move is aimed at further tightening control over Venezuela’s economy. The decision follows the recent seizure of an oil tanker by U.S. forces near Venezuela’s coast, which was preceded by a buildup of military presence in the region.

In a social media post, Trump accused Venezuela of using oil profits to fund illicit activities, such as drug trafficking, and pledged to escalate the military buildup. He emphasized that Venezuela is now surrounded by a significant naval force and warned of further expansion until assets allegedly taken from the U.S. are returned. Trump also labeled the Venezuelan regime as a “FOREIGN TERRORIST ORGANIZATION.”

Venezuela’s government promptly denounced Trump’s actions as a “grotesque threat,” while Democratic Representative Joaquin Castro criticized the blockade as an unauthorized act of war. The Pentagon redirected inquiries about the blockade to the White House.

The military maneuvers in the region have included strikes on vessels in international waters, resulting in the deaths of at least 95 individuals in 25 known incidents. The Trump administration has defended these actions as part of an effort to intercept drug shipments bound for the U.S. However, a recent interview with Trump’s chief of staff suggested that the goal is also to remove Maduro from power.

Venezuela, possessing vast oil reserves and producing around one million barrels per day, heavily relies on oil revenue for its economic sustenance. Due to U.S. sanctions imposed since 2017, Maduro’s government has resorted to clandestine means, like unmarked tankers, to smuggle oil into global markets. The state-owned oil company, PDVSA, has been excluded from official oil trade and mainly sells its exports at discounted rates to China through illicit channels.

The situation raises concerns about the impact of the blockade on Venezuela’s economy and the potential for further escalations in the region. The U.S. Navy’s significant presence, including aircraft carriers and patrol aircraft, gives it the capability to enforce the blockade effectively by monitoring maritime activities around Venezuela.
