Pete Pearson, a 75-year-old individual diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), turned to psilocybin, commonly known as “magic mushrooms,” to alleviate his end-of-life distress. Struggling with the physical and emotional toll of his condition, Pete sought relief from anxiety, frustration, and depression that had engulfed him. After an arduous and unsuccessful attempt to obtain legal access to psilocybin through Health Canada, Pete resorted to acquiring it illegally for about $40.
Having battled IPF for nearly six years, Pete’s son, Dr. Blake Pearson, a family doctor, witnessed the debilitating impact of the disease on his father’s quality of life. The family explored legal avenues, including Health Canada’s Special Access Program, to access psilocybin. Despite filing an application in October 2024 and engaging in therapy sessions geared towards psilocybin-assisted treatment, Pete faced a disheartening denial from Health Canada in July 2025.
The rejection letter cited reasons such as inadequate urgency for treatment and the availability of conventional therapeutic alternatives, overlooking Pete’s documented struggles with conventional treatments. The lengthy ordeal pushed Pete to pursue Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) as a more expedient option, which was approved within three weeks, contrasting sharply with the protracted process for psilocybin access.
Dr. Joshua Rosenblat, a psychiatrist at University Health Network in Toronto, emphasized the need for caution in deploying psychedelics for treating depression or end-of-life distress, stressing the importance of robust evidence before widespread adoption. Despite ongoing clinical trials indicating positive outcomes when combined with psychotherapy, Rosenblat cautioned against self-administration due to the unpredictable nature and potential adverse effects of psychedelics.
Pete’s transformative psilocybin experience, facilitated by his psychotherapist and an additional sitter, offered him profound insights and emotional release. The eight-hour trip led him to confront and shed emotional baggage, fostering newfound peace and alleviating his depression. Reflecting on his journey, Pete’s family, including his wife Susan and son Blake, witnessed the remarkable positive impact of psilocybin on his mental well-being.
Now, with a renewed outlook on life and a sense of contentment, Pete is savoring each moment and aims to make the most of his remaining time. While still considering MAID as a future option, the profound impact of psilocybin has provided him with a renewed sense of purpose and hope for the future.
