“Young Entrepreneurs Thrive in Canada”

Date:

LISTEN | Many children in Canada are embracing entrepreneurship:

At the age of six, Jayden Karlee Castillo embarked on a venture by selling toys in front of her residence.

Fast forward three years, she continues her entrepreneurial journey, expanding her product range and reaching out to a broader customer base.

Recently, Castillo participated in the inaugural Kids Markets event in Millarville, Alta., near Calgary, where she showcased various items such as self-made bracelets, earrings, and 3D-printed toys, alongside hand sanitizers and squishies sourced from wholesalers.

Through her efforts, Castillo has accumulated substantial savings for a future trip to Japan and the Philippines, with plans to treat her parents to a special dinner as well.

Apart from the Kids Markets initiative, which empowers children aged five to 17 to market their own creations, various programs across Canada are nurturing young entrepreneurs.

In British Columbia, youngsters can showcase their products through BizKids Market, while Toronto hosts an annual marketplace named Kid2Kid. Additionally, initiatives like the Children’s Business Fair in Brandon, Manitoba, are fostering entrepreneurial spirit nationwide.

Jodi Letkiewicz, an assistant finance professor at California State University, observes a surge in young entrepreneurs in recent years, attributing the trend to various factors.

The Lemonade Day Calgary initiative, aimed at empowering kids to operate lemonade stands, saw a record 792 participants this year, indicating a growing interest in entrepreneurship among the youth.

Letkiewicz highlights the role of social media in exposing children to peer entrepreneurs and enabling them to explore business concepts. Platforms like YouTube offer accessible resources for budding entrepreneurs to learn business fundamentals.
