A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine compared the effectiveness of two widely used blood-thinning medications in patients with deep vein clots. The drugs under scrutiny were Eliquis (apixaban) manufactured by Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer, and Xarelto (rivaroxaban) produced by Bayer and Johnson & Johnson.
These medications are prescribed to prevent recurrent blood clots that can result in strokes but can also pose a risk of severe bleeding. The study revealed that Eliquis demonstrated a lower incidence of bleeding complications compared to Xarelto, offering potential reassurance to individuals dealing with venous thrombosis.
Led by Dr. Lana Castellucci of the Ottawa Hospital, the trial involved 2,760 participants diagnosed with venous thrombosis in the legs or lungs. They were randomly assigned either Eliquis or Xarelto for treatment. Results showed that after the standard three-month treatment period, 3.3% of those on Eliquis experienced clinically significant bleeding, while 7.1% of those on Xarelto faced similar issues.
Although both drugs were found to effectively prevent recurrent blood clots, the study did not identify a significant difference in this aspect. The study cohort primarily comprised white patients with healthy organ functions and without cancer or obesity, indicating potential limitations in the generalizability of the findings.
Dr. Lisa Moores from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences emphasized the importance of these findings, suggesting that Eliquis may be a preferable initial choice over Xarelto due to its lower bleeding risk while still maintaining efficacy in preventing clot recurrence.
