Warner Music Group Settles Lawsuit with Udio, Plans AI Music Platform

Date:

Warner Music Group has resolved a copyright infringement lawsuit with AI music generation platform Udio and announced a new partnership to collaborate on an innovative AI music platform. The companies disclosed in a joint statement that Udio will develop a music platform for creation, listening, and discovery, set to launch in 2026. This platform will utilize generative AI trained on authorized music. Udio’s co-founder and CEO, Andrew Sanchez, stated that the new platform will allow fans to create music alongside their favorite artists while providing artists with control and connection.

The upcoming Udio platform will enable users to produce new songs, remixes, and covers using the works of participating artists, who will be duly compensated and credited. Notable artists under Warner include Ed Sheeran, Fleetwood Mac, Dua Lipa, and Zach Bryan. The financial terms of the settlement and agreement remain undisclosed.

This settlement is Udio’s second with a major music company, following a similar agreement with Universal Music Group. Furthermore, Warner Music Group, Universal Music Group, and Sony Music Entertainment have recently signed separate agreements with the startup Klay Vision. Warner emphasized that their collaboration with Klay Vision aims to enhance music experiences for fans through AI while respecting the rights of artists and songwriters.

Additionally, Warner announced another partnership with Stability AI to develop AI tools for songwriters, artists, and producers. The deal between Udio and Warner mirrors the agreement between Udio and Universal Music Group in the previous month, where they settled a copyright infringement lawsuit and established new licensing agreements for Udio’s AI music platform.

The increasing integration of AI in the music industry has been evident, with AI-generated music proliferating on streaming platforms and chatbot-like song generators becoming popular. AI artist Xania Monet recently made history by becoming the first bot-generated musician to debut on a Billboard airplay chart. Concerns about the impact of AI on music creation, consumption, and monetization have been raised, particularly with a survey revealing that most listeners struggle to differentiate between AI-generated and human-composed songs.
