Taylor Kirk, the musician known for his work with the group Timber Timbre, has passed away at the age of 44. A spokesperson for Kirk verified to CBC Music that the artist passed away unexpectedly on April 14. Expressing deep sorrow, the representative mentioned, “We are saddened by the significant loss of Taylor, and his presence will be greatly missed. His musical legacy will endure through the songs we are privileged to have for years to come.”
Establishing his folk-noir persona Timber Timbre in 2005, Kirk unveiled his debut album, “Medicinals,” in 2007. The third self-titled Timber Timbre album was nominated for the 2009 Polaris Music Prize, with the subsequent 2011 release, “Creep on Creepin’ On,” making it to the prize’s shortlist. Timber Timbre’s music has been prominently featured in various films and TV series, such as “Breaking Bad,” “Russian Doll,” and Sarah Polley’s “Stories We Tell.”
NPR Music aptly characterized Timber Timbre led by Taylor Kirk as a band that crafts hauntingly atmospheric songs reminiscent of nighttime sounds from a mysterious forest. Describing Kirk as a vocalist with an intriguingly gentle voice, NPR Music likened the band’s music to that of a David Lynch film or the unsettling ambiance of HBO’s “True Detective”: dark, eerie, yet captivating.
Among the tracks performed during the Tiny Desk session were “Run From Me” and “Grand Canyon.” Kirk’s most recent Timber Timbre album, “Lovage,” released in 2023, marked his seventh studio album.
