The term ‘Antifa’ originates from the German word for Antifascist, representing a network of resistance movements that emerged in response to Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler. Presently, Antifa characterizes a decentralized anti-fascist movement comprising local groups and independent activists globally.
Antifascist activities gained prominence following Antifa’s involvement in countering the white supremacist ‘Unite The Right’ rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017. Over the past decade, Antifa has become synonymous with progressive protests and grassroots activism, involving tactics such as doxxing, property damage, and physical confrontations on the streets.
In late September of the current year, U.S. President Donald Trump formally labeled Antifa as a domestic terror group. Mark Bray, an academic and expert in European history and radicalism, who authored ‘ANTIFA — the anti-fascist handbook,’ delves into the historical evolution of antifascist movements from the 1930s to the present day. He highlights how Trump’s terror designation echoes authoritarian crackdowns witnessed in the U.S., Canada, and other nations.
