A significant winter storm has impacted northern Manitoba, resulting in heavy snowfall and strong winds. Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning, predicting over 30 centimeters of snow in some areas, with the most affected regions expected to be along a line from Flin Flon through Thompson. Other areas in the warning zone were forecasted to receive 10-25 cm of snow.
Residents in various towns, such as The Pas, reported numerous fallen trees and branches due to the wet, heavy snow. The storm’s northerly winds, reaching up to 50-60 km/h, caused poor visibility and blowing snow, leading to highway closures and travel warnings.
Manitoba Hydro faced challenges with broken power poles and outages affecting about 11,000 customers in eastern, northern, and western Manitoba. Crews were working diligently to restore power, prioritizing repairs based on the impact on the most customers.
The storm also impacted businesses like Wekusko Falls Lodge, where tree removal was necessary to clear roads. Despite the disruptions, some residents expressed gratitude for the much-needed moisture following a dry summer and severe fire season.
