Local authorities in Ukraine have issued an evacuation order for residents from numerous villages near the heavily damaged northeastern city of Kupiansk due to the deteriorating security situation caused by intense Russian attacks. Oleh Syniehubov, the governor of the northeastern Kharkiv region, announced on Telegram that 409 families comprising 601 children were instructed to vacate 27 localities. Subsequently, another official revealed to the public broadcaster Suspilne that the evacuation list has been extended to 40 areas.
Russian forces have been engaging in prolonged attacks and progressing towards Kupiansk, which is a significant target in their westward advancement through central and Eastern Ukraine in the ongoing conflict. Although the town was initially captured by Russian forces during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, it was later reclaimed by Kyiv’s forces.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently emphasized the defense of crucial front-line regions, including Kupiansk, by Ukrainian forces. He also mentioned a Ukrainian counter-offensive near the town of Dobropillia to the south in recent statements. In contrast, Russian President Vladimir Putin asserted to senior officers that Moscow’s forces maintain a strategic advantage across all front-line areas. Ukraine’s top officer, Oleksandr Syrskyi, estimates that the front line spans over 1,200 kilometers.
