A strike notice has been issued by the union representing 4,400 flight attendants at WestJet, potentially leading to strike action during the busy summer travel season. The Canadian Union of Public Employees revealed that significant differences remain unresolved between the two parties.
Alia Hussain, the chair of the union’s WestJet division, emphasized the need for changes and fair negotiations in a press release issued early on Thursday. Despite the strike notice, there is still room for resolution, with bargaining efforts continuing without pause.
WestJet has responded to the union’s strike notice by initiating a 72-hour lockout notice. The airline, Canada’s second-largest carrier, is actively engaged in negotiations to secure a mutually acceptable agreement.
Expressing regret for any inconvenience caused to guests, WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech highlighted the airline’s commitment to minimizing disruptions and ensuring operational stability. Although the union’s notice doesn’t guarantee a strike, the possibility of job action looms if an agreement is not reached by Sunday at 12:01 a.m. MT.
Passengers potentially affected by the strike have been offered flexibility by WestJet, allowing them to make changes or cancel flights scheduled between July 30 and Aug. 4 without incurring fees. Flights operated by WestJet Encore or partner airlines like Delta Air Lines are expected to remain unaffected in the event of a strike.
Contingency plans have also been put in place, outlining procedures for grounding flights and assisting cabin crew in case of a work stoppage. Key concerns for the union include unpaid duties, particularly related to ground tasks, while WestJet asserts that all duties are compensated under a credit hour system.
As negotiations continue, the financial impact of a potential strike on WestJet during peak travel periods is a significant concern, given the airline’s extensive daily operations serving thousands of passengers.
