U.S. President Donald Trump has officially adjusted the national security tariffs under Section 232 for certain aluminum, steel, and copper imports, as confirmed by the White House on Monday. The changes, effective starting June 8, will see a reduction in tariffs from 25 percent to 15 percent on specific steel and aluminum derivative products, such as certain agricultural machinery and residential heating, air conditioning, and ventilation equipment.
According to a statement from the White House, mobile industrial equipment like bulldozers and forklifts will now face a 15 percent tariff when imported from trade deal countries eligible for such treatment. Additionally, foreign companies can qualify for a 10 percent tariff if at least 85 percent of their capital equipment comprises U.S. melted and poured or smelted and cast steel or aluminum by weight.
The adjustments introduce two new categories of steel and aluminum derivative import products subject to 25 percent duties: steel racks and aluminum lithographic plates. These changes will go into effect for goods imported or withdrawn from bonded warehouses after 12:01 a.m. ET on June 8 and are set to remain in place until December 31, 2027, with the aim of encouraging immediate investments to revitalize the country’s industrial foundation.
