Suncor Energy Sells Offshore Oil Stakes for $1.2B

Date:

Suncor Energy, based in Calgary, has revealed changes in Newfoundland and Labrador’s offshore oil sector by announcing the sale of stakes in three oilfields. The company disclosed a deal with Ithaca Energy, a U.K.-based firm, to divest its interests in Terra Nova, White Rose, and West White Rose assets. The transaction involves an upfront cash payment of $1.2 billion, with an additional contingent amount of up to $350 million tied to future oil prices.

Suncor’s CEO, Rich Kruger, emphasized that the move is aimed at maximizing long-term shareholder value by focusing on strategic opportunities. The company will retain its positions in N.L.’s Hebron and Hibernia oilfields. Ithaca, in its statement, expressed that the acquisition aligns with its growth strategy, marking its entry into the Offshore East Coast Canada region.

The Energy and Mines Minister of Newfoundland and Labrador, Lloyd Parrott, hailed the development as promising, noting Suncor’s reorientation towards the oil sands in Western Canada. He welcomed Ithaca’s expertise from the North Sea, highlighting their understanding of the local environment’s challenges. Parrott assured that the acquisition is intended to prolong the oilfields’ lifespan and collaborate with other industry players, indicating potential job growth rather than losses.

Jim Keating, CEO of OilCo, echoed the positive sentiment, viewing the deal as a vote of confidence in the province’s offshore sector. He anticipates Ithaca’s strategic expansion and innovative contributions to the industry. Keating emphasized the value of new entrants bringing fresh perspectives and investment appetites to mature basins like Newfoundland and Labrador.

The announcement has drawn attention from Liberal energy critic Fred Hutton, who acknowledged the common practice of companies divesting interests but expressed interest in the deal’s implications for job stability. Hutton emphasized the significance of the oil and gas industry in the province and the potential for Ithaca to become a major player in the region.

The transaction underscores shifting dynamics in the oil and gas sector, with companies adapting their portfolios to align with evolving market trends and strategic priorities. The deal is set to close early next year, subject to regulatory approvals and partner consent, signaling a new chapter in Newfoundland and Labrador’s offshore energy landscape.
