A well-known figure in the local area is creating excitement among residents. Recent reports of a red-haired woodpecker at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary have stirred up the birdwatching community, drawing numerous enthusiasts to the popular park daily to catch a glimpse of this rare avian visitor.
Sophia Su, an enthusiastic birder, attended her mother’s graduation ceremony at the University of Calgary and promptly headed to southeast Calgary in search of the woodpecker. Despite her family’s amusement at her passion, Su expressed her dedication to spotting 200 bird species by year-end, emphasizing the significance of each species in her pursuit.
Su easily located the woodpecker amidst a group of around a dozen photographers capturing its image. Describing her encounter, she recounted the striking black and white wings and the vibrant red head of the bird, expressing her joy at the sighting.
The presence of the red-headed woodpecker has attracted considerable attention due to its unusual appearance in Calgary. Jody Allair from Birds Canada explained that the species is typically found in southern Ontario and Manitoba, occasionally straying into Alberta. The bird’s presence in Inglewood is attributed to the sanctuary’s suitable habitat with a mix of mature trees and open spaces.
Despite its endangered status, the red-headed woodpecker population shows signs of improvement, particularly in Western Canada. Allair expressed optimism regarding the potential population growth and downgrading of the bird’s endangered status, highlighting the importance of conservation efforts and celebrating conservation successes.
The influx of red-headed woodpeckers into Alberta is believed to stem from expanding populations in the United States, with young males venturing into new territories. Allair expressed hope for the success of these exploratory birds and the possibility of seeing more of these remarkable woodpeckers in the region.
