Outrage as Video Shows Palestinian Men Shot in Surrender

Date:

Humanitarian organizations have condemned the shooting of two Palestinian individuals in the West Bank by Israeli security personnel. The incident, captured on video, depicted the victims seemingly surrendering before being fatally shot, sparking outrage and calls for an independent investigation.

The two men, Al-Muntasir Abdullah, 26, and Yousef Asasa, 37, were reportedly unarmed and in a surrendering position during a raid in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, as shown in footage from Palestine TV. Israeli authorities stated that an investigation was initiated after shots were fired at suspects exiting a building.

Family members of the deceased expressed shock and dismay over the killings, with Mahmoud Asasa, whose brother was among those killed, denouncing the act as brutal and unjustifiable. The Palestinian Islamic Jihad claimed one of the victims as a commander and the other as a fighter.

In response to the incident, the United Nations Human Rights Office spokesperson, Jeremy Laurence, criticized the lack of accountability for such actions, emphasizing the need for lawful procedures and condemning extrajudicial killings. Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir defended the military and police’s actions, asserting that terrorists should be eliminated.

Human rights advocate Sarit Michaeli highlighted the chilling nature of the footage, where the victims were seen complying before being shot, stressing the responsibility of policymakers for such incidents. The Palestinian Authority Foreign Ministry condemned the shooting as a war crime and urged international intervention.

The incident in Jenin is part of a series of violent episodes in the West Bank, following a surge in tensions since a ceasefire agreement was reached in Gaza. The UN documented numerous Palestinian casualties in the region, calling for a thorough investigation and accountability for those responsible for human rights violations.
