“Old Ottawa South Celebrates Discovery of Ancient ‘Bellwood Boulder'”

Date:

Residents of Old Ottawa South are rejoicing over the installation of new signage detailing the discovery of an ancient boulder unearthed in their neighborhood during the COVID-19 pandemic. Gauri Sreenivasan, a resident of Bellwood Avenue, expressed the significance of the boulder and the need for public awareness and engagement through the newly unveiled sign at Windsor Park.

The signage sheds light on the origins of the massive erratic, now affectionately called the “Bellwood Boulder,” which was deposited in the area by glacial movements around 10,000 years ago. It remained hidden beneath Bellwood Avenue until April 2021 when it was uncovered during water pipe replacement work.

During the pandemic lockdown, Sreenivasan and other residents of Bellwood Avenue found solace around the giant rock, viewing it as a gathering spot and a symbol of community unity. Despite initial plans to crush the boulder for removal, efforts from residents led to its preservation and relocation to Windsor Park.

The relocation event, attended by residents like Lindsay Suthren, highlighted the strength of community action in saving the boulder. Sreenivasan emphasized the lesson learned from the experience, showcasing the power of collective efforts in preserving a piece of natural history and fostering neighborhood bonds.

The installation of the sign not only commemorates the “Bellwood Boulder” but also serves as a reminder of the impact of community mobilization. Sreenivasan hopes that visitors who read the sign will recognize the influence of united voices in preserving the boulder for future generations.
