Russian Drone Attack Kills Dozens in Western Ukraine

Date:

At least 26 individuals lost their lives, and numerous individuals are unaccounted for following a Russian drone and missile assault that struck residential buildings in Ternopil, a city in western Ukraine, as indicated by Ukraine’s interior minister on Wednesday.

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko reported that 26 people were still missing after the attack, including three children, with nearly 100 individuals sustaining injuries. The onslaught involved 476 drones and 48 missiles targeting energy and transport infrastructure, leading to emergency power outages in several regions amid freezing temperatures.

The assault caused severe damage to the upper floors of a residential building in Ternopil, resulting in black smoke billowing and an orange glow from fires within the tower block.

Klymenko, communicating via Telegram, mentioned that emergency teams worked tirelessly through the night, searching the debris of the destroyed apartment complex. He emphasized the importance of locating any potential survivors trapped under the wreckage.

In a harrowing account, Oksana Kobel expressed hope that her son, who was on the ninth floor during the attack, would be found alive. She recounted her last conversation with him urging him to seek shelter.

In response to the escalating conflict, Poland, a NATO member neighboring western Ukraine, temporarily shut down airports in Rzeszow and Lublin, deploying Polish and allied aircraft to safeguard its airspace.

Reports also emerged of strikes hitting residential buildings in other Ukrainian cities, leaving many potentially trapped under debris. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged international allies to intensify pressure on Russia to halt the ongoing conflict, emphasizing the need for enhanced support, including air defense systems for Ukraine.

Furthermore, energy infrastructure in seven Ukrainian regions was targeted, leading to restrictions on power consumption nationwide. The situation remained volatile, with reports of explosions in Lviv and residents seeking refuge in metro stations in Kyiv.

While Russia denied deliberately targeting civilians and claimed retaliation for alleged terrorist attacks on its soil, Ukraine’s military asserted launching counterattacks on Russian military installations. Zelenskyy engaged in diplomatic efforts in Turkey and planned discussions with U.S. military officials to seek avenues for peace negotiations with Russia.

Despite recent peace talks brokered by Turkey, direct dialogue between Kyiv and Moscow remained elusive. The Kremlin downplayed reports of a comprehensive U.S. peace plan for Ukraine, emphasizing the need for sustained international support to address the conflict’s humanitarian and security challenges.
