“Newfoundland and Labrador Votes in Provincial Election”

Date:

Polling stations have commenced operations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador for the current provincial election. The polls started at 8 a.m. NT and 7:30 a.m. in most of Labrador, covering 40 districts.

One voter, Jeanette Miranda from St. John’s East-Quidi Vidi, shared her experience with CBC News, expressing that voting was a swift and straightforward process for her. Miranda emphasized her focus on supporting more women candidates to enter the House of Assembly, believing that having women in power leads to effective governance.

Other voters, Elizabeth Oliver and Noel Roy, emphasized the importance of trusting the Member of the House of Assembly (MHA) they voted for, rather than a specific issue. They highlighted the significance of having trustworthy representation.

The leaders of the political parties were early voters on Tuesday. Liberal Leader John Hogan cast his ballot in St. John’s, expressing confidence in his party’s diverse slate of candidates. He criticized the Conservative plan, highlighting differences in their approaches, and emphasized the Liberal Party’s comprehensive and forward-thinking platform.

Meanwhile, PC Leader Tony Wakeham voted in Kippens, N.L., celebrating the successful campaign of the Progressive Conservative Party. Wakeham expressed optimism about potential seat changes and commended all candidates for their dedication to provincial politics.

NDP Leader Jim Dinn voted alongside his wife in St. John’s, focusing on the NDP’s platform to bring significant savings to the province and invest in public services.

This election marks the third and final scheduled election in Newfoundland and Labrador in 2025, following a federal election in April and municipal elections last month. The Liberal Party aims to secure a fourth consecutive term in power, with the Progressive Conservative Party and New Democratic Party as their main competitors.

Voting is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. NT today, with full coverage of the election results available on CBC Newfoundland and Labrador later in the evening.
