“Mystery Solved: Missing Tortoise Travels 20km to Manitoba Wetland”

Date:

A tortoise named Molly, not native to the area, was discovered roaming slowly near a wetland in Manitoba, Canada. The staff at Oak Hammock Marsh were surprised to find the 36-kilogram African spurred tortoise in an unfamiliar habitat. Initially dismissing reports as a misidentification of a local snapping turtle, the staff eventually located Molly after a sighting was logged on the iNaturalist app.

Upon finding Molly, staff members at Oak Hammock Marsh provided her with care, including feeding her cucumbers and flower petals. They later reunited Molly with her owners after identifying a missing tortoise post on social media. Molly’s family had raised her for 15 years, and the staff learned that she had likely escaped through a gap in their backyard fence during renovations.

Despite the reunion, it remains a mystery how Molly managed to travel approximately 20 kilometers to reach the marsh. Speculations range from a well-meaning individual relocating her to the possibility that she journeyed there on her own. The staff at Oak Hammock Marsh expressed gratitude for Molly’s safe return and highlighted the importance of understanding the unique needs of exotic animals to prevent similar incidents in the future.
