“Music Unites: Homeless Advocate Emphasizes Healing Power”

Date:

Leonard Graham Crawford emphasizes the unifying power of music, advocating for its widespread accessibility. Having experienced homelessness for nine years since losing his home in 2010, Crawford now receives support from Grace Place, an organization offering essential services on Thunder Bay’s south side.

During a recent lunchtime event, clients at Grace Place enjoyed a complimentary piano performance by Mike Boguski, the talented keyboardist of the renowned Canadian rock band Blue Rodeo. Crawford expressed how the music brought solace and unity, allowing individuals to momentarily escape their hardships.

Grace Place provides around 300 daily meals and has initiated the Out of the Cold program, offering 25 emergency beds since October 1. With rising living costs, the demand for assistance has escalated, as noted by Gary Macsemchuk, one of the pastors at Grace Place.

Boguski is on a special initiative called a “tour within a tour,” performing free solo concerts in various communities across the province, including a stop in Sault Ste. Marie. His goal is to share the healing power of music with those who may not have the means to attend traditional concerts.

Recognizing the positive impact of music, Melody Macsemchuk, the operations manager at Grace Place, welcomed Boguski’s performance wholeheartedly. Clients like Robert Esquega, a member of the Red Rock Indian Band, expressed their joy and appreciation for the uplifting music experience.

In addition to the musical event, Thunder Bay’s Homeless and Addiction Recovery Treatment (HART) Hub organized a free vaccination clinic at Grace Place, with another session scheduled for October 29. As winter approaches, donations of warm clothing, particularly jackets and socks, are urgently needed.

To further support their clients, Grace Place accepts both monetary contributions and grocery items, ensuring that individuals in need receive essential supplies and meals. As part of Thunder Bay’s winter emergency plan, collaboration with other shelters and overflow facilities like Urban Abbey is essential to safeguarding vulnerable individuals from the harsh weather conditions.
