In the aftermath of cyclone-triggered floods and landslides that struck Sumatra island in Indonesia, Abdul Ghani has been tirelessly searching for his missing wife, Marsoni. The 57-year-old, who sells soft drinks for a living, has been wandering through the mud-covered streets of Palembayan, desperately seeking any sign of his wife of 25 years.
Having lost their only child seven years ago, Marsoni is Ghani’s sole remaining family member, making the search even more agonizing. Despite his diminishing hopes of finding her alive, Ghani carries a photograph of her everywhere, hoping for closure even if it means recovering just a fragment of her remains.
Ghani was away working when heavy rain began to pour. Upon returning, he discovered that six houses, including his own, had been swept away near the river. His immediate concern was for his wife, prompting him to display her picture to anyone willing to help, amid the chaotic scenes of collapsed buildings and ongoing rescue efforts.
The recent catastrophe in Indonesia has resulted in the loss of 686 lives, with 476 individuals still unaccounted for, and over a million people forced to evacuate to safety. The widespread destruction has deeply impacted not only Indonesia but neighboring countries like Malaysia and Thailand, adding to the series of severe weather events across Southeast Asia in recent months.
With a heavy heart, Ghani expressed his desire for a proper burial for his beloved wife, emphasizing their deep bond and the void left by her absence.
