“Experts Warn Against B.C.’s Permanent Daylight Time”

Date:

Experts in the field of sleep research are cautioning against British Columbia’s move to adopt permanent daylight time, citing potential negative impacts on health, especially for children. Myriam Juda, a sleep researcher and adjunct professor at Simon Fraser University, highlighted global concerns and recommendations for adopting permanent standard time instead of daylight saving time.

The transition to permanent daylight time in B.C. will take effect this weekend, eliminating the need for clock changes moving forward. Criticisms of this decision come from individuals like Jamie Zeitzer, a professor at Stanford University, whose research was referenced in the B.C. government’s announcement. Zeitzer expressed reservations about the health implications of the change, emphasizing the importance of maintaining consistency for overall well-being.

The shift from standard time to daylight saving time alters the distribution of daylight throughout the day, potentially disrupting our internal body clocks, known as circadian rhythms. Juda explained that exposure to morning light plays a crucial role in regulating sleep patterns and hormone release, particularly melatonin, impacting alertness and fatigue levels.

Concerns are raised regarding the impact of darker mornings under permanent daylight time, affecting activities such as commuting and children walking to school in low light conditions. The potential loss of sleep and misalignment with natural light cycles could lead to social jet lag and various health issues over time.

While public consultations showed strong support for permanent daylight saving time in British Columbia, limited options were presented to the public, omitting the choice for permanent standard time. The government cited alignment with neighboring jurisdictions as a factor in the decision-making process, without specifying scientific sources informing the choice.

Economic considerations, such as extended evening daylight for recreational activities and businesses, were mentioned as potential benefits of daylight saving time. However, concerns remain regarding the lack of comprehensive health arguments supporting the shift to permanent daylight time over standard time.
