Gander International Airport Issues Warning About Catfishing Scams
Gander International Airport has issued a cautionary message regarding catfishing scams following multiple incidents witnessed by airport staff at arrival gates recently.
According to CEO Reg Wright, there have been approximately six known cases within a month in the relatively small market serviced by the airport. The awareness of this issue was raised by the airport’s safety director just last week.
Wright recounted a specific incident involving a woman who arrived dressed elegantly, expecting to meet a non-existent loved one. The disappointment experienced by the victims and the airport staff is described as heartbreaking by Wright.
Primarily targeting seniors, these scams can lead victims to wait for hours before accepting the harsh reality that their anticipated companion is a hoax.
Wright emphasized that these scams exploit the innate human desire for love and connection, often involving financial deception. While the airport cannot directly disclose to individuals that they have fallen victim to catfishing, issuing a general warning is within their capacity.
Not limited to Gander Airport, these scams are a widespread issue affecting airports nationwide, with staff members from various locations sharing similar concerns.
Wright labeled catfishing as a prevalent cybercrime, akin to identity theft, with vulnerable individuals being the primary targets. He urged people to remain vigilant, especially in monitoring the online interactions of loved ones to prevent falling victim to such deceitful schemes.
