Residents in the Village of Cumberland are being urged to exercise caution following a black bear attack that resulted in one person being injured. The incident took place when two hikers, accompanied by an off-leash dog, encountered a family of black bears near the Bevan Wetlands. One of the hikers sustained injuries and was subsequently treated at a hospital before being discharged. The B.C. Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) confirmed that the attack was defensive in nature and, although the bear was not located, the area will be closely monitored.
The Village of Cumberland has taken to social media to advise visitors to remain vigilant for black bear presence by looking out for signs such as fresh scat and tracks. Hikers are encouraged to hike in groups, leash their dogs, carry bear spray, and make noise while traversing through the wilderness. Any instances of aggressive bear behavior or encounters between humans and wildlife can be reported to the Conservation Officer Service’s 24-hour RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277.
