A federal judge in the United States granted permission to the Justice Department on Friday to unveil transcripts from a grand jury investigation into Jeffrey Epstein’s exploitation of underage girls in Florida. Despite no federal charges being brought against the convicted sex offender, U.S. District Judge Rodney Smith cited a new federal law signed by President Donald Trump in November that mandates the disclosure of records connected to Epstein.
The investigation, which dates back over two decades, saw local police in Palm Beach, Florida, and the FBI looking into reports from teenage girls about providing sexualized massages to Epstein. Subsequently, federal prosecutors in Florida prepared an indictment in 2007, but Epstein’s legal team discredited his accusers while negotiating a plea deal that allowed him to evade serious prison time.
In 2008, Epstein pleaded guilty to state charges of soliciting prostitution from a minor and served most of his sentence under a work release program. The decision by then-U.S. attorney in Miami Alex Acosta not to pursue federal charges sparked outrage and led to his resignation as Trump’s labour secretary following renewed scrutiny of the case by the Miami Herald in 2018.
Epstein faced a new indictment in 2019 on sex trafficking charges in New York, mirroring previous allegations, but he died in a New York City prison cell shortly after. His death was ruled a suicide, and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell was later tried, convicted, and sentenced to 20 years in prison on similar charges.
The release date for the grand jury transcripts from the Florida case remains uncertain, with the Justice Department yet to announce a timeline. The newly passed law sets a deadline of December 19 for the disclosure of related materials, with provisions allowing for the withholding of certain files to protect ongoing investigations or classified information. Additionally, the Justice Department is seeking the release of grand jury records from the New York cases against Epstein and Maxwell, with rulings expected promptly by the respective judges.
