Several Canadian jewelry brands are increasing their prices due to a surge in gold demand driven by investors’ concerns about the economic outlook, leading to record-high prices for the precious metal. The escalating demand for gold, as a safe investment amid global economic uncertainty and diminishing confidence in the U.S. dollar, is prompting jewelry makers to pass on the additional costs to consumers.
Melanie Auld, a Vancouver-based jewelry designer, noted that rising gold and silver prices have compelled her to raise prices on certain products. Gold prices have recently peaked at around $4,300 US per troy ounce, with silver prices also on the rise, creating challenges for businesses like hers.
To adapt to the soaring material costs, Auld’s company is shifting focus towards more affordably priced materials like wood, leather, and stone for their jewelry pieces. Auld emphasized the importance of creativity in design and alternative materials amidst the sustained high gold prices.
Similarly, Mejuri, a popular Toronto jewelry retailer known for its accessible prices, recently informed customers of price increases to offset higher gold costs. The company’s co-founder mentioned streamlining the supply chain and strategic sourcing to manage the price adjustments effectively.
In contrast, other jewelry brands like Jenny Bird are leveraging supplier discounts and optimizing shipments to mitigate the impact of rising costs. Jenny Bird’s chief operating officer emphasized maintaining profitability through cost-saving measures while keeping the jewelry materials unchanged.
Reena Ahluwalia, a Toronto-based jewelry designer, is exploring cost-effective strategies such as using lighter-weight gold and incorporating colored stones into designs to manage expenses amidst the gold price surge. She highlighted the industry’s need to adapt to the ongoing demand for gold, with luxury brands better positioned to absorb price hikes compared to mass-market players.
The surge in gold prices, attributed to economic uncertainties and global trade tensions, has drawn comparisons to gold as a hedge against instability, akin to possessing insurance against unforeseen events. Institutional investors closely monitoring gold futures have a direct impact on current gold prices, influencing costs for businesses and consumers.
With gold being a finite resource and central banks and retail investors actively acquiring gold, coupled with limited new mining activities, the outlook for gold prices remains high. The jewelry market’s continued demand for gold further contributes to the sustained price levels, signaling potential challenges for businesses in the near future.
