“Canadian Consumer Shift: Buy Local Movement Gains Momentum”

Date:

Since early 2025, Francine Piché from Burlington, Ont., has actively avoided purchasing American goods following the initial tariffs imposed by the U.S. on Canada. Piché‘s household policy prioritizes Canadian products, followed by non-U.S. options, with a strict avoidance of American items whenever possible. In response to the recent implementation of new 50% U.S. tariffs, Piché has decided to cease all exceptions.

As a result, Piché has already transitioned to Canadian personal care brands, terminated her Amazon membership, and scrapped plans for a New York trip to refrain from contributing funds to the U.S., except when no alternatives are available. Her family intends to discontinue their American streaming subscriptions and she is prepared to forgo certain gluten-free American food items, despite the lack of substitutes.

The surge in the Buy Canadian movement has seen consumers increasingly embracing Canadian products, with heightened interest in platforms like the Made in Canada Facebook group, which has witnessed a significant rise in engagement. The group, which already boasts over 1.4 million members sharing information on Canadian products, has experienced a 300% increase in views compared to June 2026. Administrator Jayne Little notes a substantial influx of new members and a shift towards more in-depth discussions on finding Canadian sources for various consumer needs.

Additionally, apps like O SCANada, developed by Ryan Checora, have seen a resurgence in downloads, indicating a growing interest among Canadians in understanding the origins of products they purchase. Despite some consumers prioritizing price over the country of origin, brands like Peace by Chocolate have received increased support during these trade hostilities, with a spike in web traffic and a surge in demand for their Canadian-themed chocolate bars.

Although the trade tensions between Canada and the U.S. persist, the Buy Canadian movement continues to gain momentum, with consumers demonstrating a strong inclination towards supporting homegrown businesses and products. The current sentiment underscores a collective effort to promote Canadian pride and solidarity amidst economic uncertainties and trade disputes.
