“Canadian Athletes Seek Increased Government Support”

Date:

At the conclusion of the successful Summer Olympics in Paris last year, David Shoemaker, the CEO of the Canadian Olympic Committee, expressed concern about the need for increased support from the federal government for Canadian athletes. With Canada securing 27 medals in various disciplines such as swimming, beach volleyball, and track and field, Shoemaker emphasized the untapped potential of Canadian athletes that could be further realized with additional resources.

Shoemaker highlighted the stagnant core funding for the 62 federally-funded national sports organizations over the past 19 years, creating financial challenges and deficits for these organizations. He stressed the importance of enhancing funding to ensure a safe and inclusive sports system for all athletes.

Nearly 10 months later, under the leadership of new Prime Minister Mark Carney, the sports portfolio is now overseen by Adam van Koeverden, a renowned former kayaker with four Olympic medals. Van Koeverden, now serving as the secretary of state for sport, faces the critical task of addressing the long-standing funding demands of sport organizations, including the necessary $144 million increase to compensate for the lack of substantial funding boosts in the past two decades.

Additionally, van Koeverden is entrusted with addressing the ongoing safe-sport crisis and implementing recommendations from the Future of Sport in Canada Commission report, due in March. As emphasized by both the Canadian Olympic Committee and Canadian Paralympic Committee, preserving the significance of sports in the Canadian identity remains a top priority amidst the current challenges.

Looking ahead, with the Canadian women’s rugby team gearing up for the World Cup, funding remains a pressing issue for Rugby Canada CEO Nathan Bombrys. Despite the team’s high ranking and potential for success, fundraising efforts are necessary to support essential training needs and ensure competitive participation in the global tournament.

Olympic athletes across Canada, represented by Philippe Marquis, Chair of the Canadian Olympic Committee’s Athletes’ Commission, echo the urgency for increased funding to sustain national sport organizations and support athletes in their training and development. The recent increase in living and training allowances under the Athlete Assistance Program was a positive step, but ongoing financial support is crucial for athlete sustainability.

Van Koeverden’s familiarity with the sports portfolio and his commitment to advocating for increased core funding for national sport organizations reflect a shared goal among sport leaders to secure the necessary resources for athletes’ success. As discussions continue on the level of government support needed for sports organizations and athletes, the emphasis remains on fostering grassroots sports participation and nurturing elite talent to uphold Canada’s sporting excellence.
