“Canada Post to Transition 500K Addresses to Community Mailboxes”

Date:

Canada Post has revealed that nearly 500,000 addresses will transition to community mailboxes next year. This decision affects 37 communities and follows the announcement made in April concerning 136,000 homes. The majority of impacted addresses are in Ontario and Quebec, including areas in the Greater Toronto Area, southwestern and eastern Ontario, as well as the Montreal region, Quebec City, and Trois-Rivières.

Furthermore, several communities in British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Halifax, Calgary, and Edmonton are also included in the latest plan. Canada Post aims to convert all four million addresses that currently receive door-to-door delivery to shared mailboxes over the next five years. This transition is projected to save $400 million annually once completed.

The postal service’s move towards community mailboxes is part of its strategy to adapt to the changing needs of Canadians while minimizing the financial burden on taxpayers, according to a statement by Canada Post. The company, which reported record losses of $1.57 billion in 2025, is undergoing significant restructuring and is currently sustained by $2 billion in federal loans.

With approximately 75% of Canadian households already utilizing community mailboxes, Canada Post highlights the enhanced security provided by centralized mailbox systems. The company also offers accommodation programs for individuals facing accessibility challenges with community mailboxes, ensuring that weekly home delivery remains an option for those in need.

A list of postal codes slated for conversion to community mailboxes includes various regions across Canada. This transition underscores Canada Post’s commitment to modernizing its services to meet the evolving demands of its customers.
