“Federal Tree-Planting Program Cancellation Imperils Forest Restoration Efforts”

Date:

Marley Moose, aged 22, is dedicating her third summer to tree-planting in northern Manitoba, part of a team focused on restoring forests damaged by wildfires. The task has become more daunting due to the discontinuation of a federal initiative aiming to plant two billion trees by 2030.

In Manitoba’s Interlake region, a forest previously hit by a jack pine budworm infestation in 2016 faced further destruction from wildfires in 2021. Moose, actively planting jack pine and black spruce trees, expressed sorrow witnessing the devastation but emphasized the importance of revitalizing these barren areas.

The Canadian Tree Nursery Association (CTNA) highlights the urgent need for tree restoration, citing a significant loss of trees surpassing natural growth and planting rates. Factors like development, lumber demand, and pest infestation contribute to the depletion of Canada’s forests. Moreover, wildfires have destroyed nearly a tenth of the country’s forests between 2023 and 2025.

The 2 Billion Trees Program, a federal initiative established by former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to address tree replanting, was terminated by the current government to reallocate funds to defense and infrastructure projects. This cancellation poses a threat to tree-planting initiatives like the Nekoté LP program, jeopardizing efforts to restore the country’s forests.

Amid concerns of escalating wildfires and carbon emissions, industry experts and environmentalists are collaborating to develop alternative solutions following the program’s cancellation. Farron Sharp, a project manager with Blue-Green Planet Project, is actively seeking new sources of funding to sustain tree-planting efforts in Manitoba’s Devils Lake area.

As the tree-planting endeavor strives to combat environmental degradation and climate change, Moose and her team persist in their laborious work, aiming to create a healthier environment for future generations to enjoy.
