In downtown Windsor, a local artist is drawing attention to the numerous empty storefronts by putting up large orange and black signs that read “Spirit Halloween Coming Soon.” These signs are not related to the actual store but are meant to highlight the vacant spaces in the city’s core. Daniel Bombardier, also known as Denial, initiated this project to spark discussions about the abandoned locations, many of which he describes as appearing haunted.
Bombardier’s inspiration came after acquiring a significant number of these signs and recognizing their potential impact. He views the use of Spirit Halloween banners as a metaphor for the prevalence of closed-down businesses in the area. By juxtaposing these signs with the deserted buildings, he aims to prompt efforts to repurpose these spaces and prevent them from remaining abandoned and derelict.
The artist emphasizes the need for initiatives such as rent subsidies or incentives to rejuvenate these business locations, comparing the current state to a post-apocalyptic and eerie atmosphere reminiscent of Spirit Halloween. By shedding light on the issue, Bombardier hopes to inspire similar actions and collaborations to revitalize Windsor’s downtown, taking cues from successful urban renewal projects in cities like Detroit.
Jess Reimer, who assisted in the project, encourages others to participate by displaying these signs creatively around the city. Councilor Renaldo Agostino, representing downtown Windsor, acknowledges the humorous aspect of the signs and their role in sparking conversations.
