Several charitable organizations report that some children in Alberta are experiencing food insecurity due to the suspension of school food programs amid a provincewide teachers strike. The strike, now in its eighth day, has impacted thousands of students across the region.
Jared Jorstad, a spokesperson for Hope Mission, shared a story of a mother who sacrificed her meals to ensure her children were fed during the strike. Concerns are raised for children who have not received assistance since 51,000 teachers initiated the strike on October 6. With approximately 750,000 students out of school and about 2,500 schools closed, the loss of access to free breakfast and lunch programs is particularly challenging for families facing financial constraints.
Hope Mission has collaborated with five Catholic schools in Edmonton to distribute paper bag lunches to students in need. Around 200 to 250 students have been benefiting from this initiative daily since the strike began. The ongoing strike, led by members of the Alberta Teachers’ Association, marks the largest walkout in the province’s history, with key issues including salary negotiations, classroom overcrowding, and support for students with specialized needs.
The Mustard Seed non-profit organization in Red Deer, Alberta, which typically provided hundreds of lunches daily to schools, is now only able to supply a fraction of that number due to the strike. Concerns are expressed about the well-being of students who may be missing out on essential meals. Efforts are being made to inform families about available food services, including partnerships with local organizations to ensure children receive meals while schools are closed.
The importance of nutrition for students’ physical and academic well-being is emphasized, with organizations like the Breakfast Club of Canada hoping for a swift resolution between teachers and the government. The pause in school meal programs has disrupted the normal routine for many students who relied on these services, impacting their social interactions and learning environment.
