“Alcatraz Coyote’s 3km Ocean Swim Stuns Experts”

Date:

A wild dog amazed experts by swimming an impressive 3 kilometers across ocean currents. Camilla Fox, the founder of Project Coyote, expressed astonishment at the journey of the so-called “Alcatraz Coyote,” highlighting the uniqueness of the coyote’s feat in traversing such a distance through major ocean currents.

In a recent interview with As It Happens, Fox shared her fascination with wild canines, shaped by her family’s involvement in fostering an orphaned wolf pup and studying wild dogs. The male coyote’s journey to Alcatraz Island initially puzzled biologists who believed it swam from San Francisco, only to discover it actually originated from Angel Island, approximately twice the distance.

Witnesses observed the weary coyote struggling to reach the rocky shore of Alcatraz on January 24, resembling a drowned rat. While scientists confirmed its successful arrival on the island, the reason for its swim remains uncertain. Fox speculated that the coyote may have sought to expand its territory or find a mate, driven by biological instincts.

Coyotes, renowned for their adaptability, face challenges such as aggression in their natural habitats. Joel Berger, a wildlife ecology professor at Colorado State University, suggested that the Alcatraz Coyote may have sought sanctuary on the island due to territorial conflicts. Berger emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence with coyotes to appreciate their ecological significance.

As the Alcatraz Island now serves as a conservation area for diverse wildlife, including seabirds and marine life, the coyote’s presence raises questions about its survival and impact on the ecosystem. Researchers are monitoring the coyote’s behavior to understand its interactions with the island’s wildlife population.

Fox underscored the need to educate the public about the misunderstood nature of coyotes and their vital role as apex predators in North American ecosystems. Project Coyote aims to raise awareness and foster peaceful coexistence between humans and coyotes. Ongoing research at the University of California Davis seeks to unravel the genetic mysteries of coyotes around Angel Island and San Francisco.

The Alcatraz Coyote is part of a growing coyote population on Angel Island, following a colonization event in 2017. Fox expressed anticipation for the coyote’s future, hoping to learn more about its journey and potential return to Angel Island.
