In the past decade, fans adored Matthew Perry’s character, Chandler Bing, on the long-running show “Friends.” However, following his passing in 2023, many found it challenging to reconcile the news about his ketamine addiction with the beloved sitcom persona they knew well. Netflix has announced a three-part docuseries titled “The One About Matthew Perry,” aiming to provide a comprehensive look at the life of the Canadian-born actor.
The series will delve into Perry’s evolution from a rising comedic talent to his iconic role on the popular NBC show. Netflix revealed that the documentary will feature never-before-heard accounts from Perry’s inner circle, including close friends and his sister Mia Perry Bowick, who is a grief specialist. Bowick, who has openly shared her grieving process after Perry’s passing, expressed that it took time for her to be ready to share memories of loving Matthew in all his complexities and not just as the character Chandler or someone battling addiction.
Matthew Perry tragically passed away at the age of 54 due to a ketamine overdose in his backyard hot tub. Several individuals have pleaded guilty to various offenses related to providing him with the drug. Dr. Salvador Plasencia, one of those involved in selling Perry ketamine, is currently appealing his 30-month prison sentence.
Netflix assured that the docuseries will not only focus on the positive memories of Perry but will also shed light on his private struggles, aiming to honor his legacy of transparency and advocacy. The series is set to premiere on Oct. 27.
