“Researchers Study Harm Reduction at Music Festivals”

Date:

A team of researchers is currently investigating the implementation of harm reduction practices at summer music festivals, where the use of psychedelics and other drugs has been prevalent for many years. Erika Dyck, a history professor at the University of Saskatchewan and a Canada Research Chair in the history of health and social justice, has dedicated two decades to studying psychedelics and their impact.

According to Dyck, music festivals serve as recreational spaces where individuals not only enjoy themselves but also actively seek to care for others and minimize potential harms associated with drug use. Kenneth Tupper, an adjunct professor at the School of Population and Public Health at the University of British Columbia, is also involved in this research initiative.

The origin of drug checking practices in Canada can be traced back to music festivals, particularly during the toxic drug crisis of 2016, when British Columbia declared a public health emergency. The British Columbia Centre on Substance Use introduced a portable FTIR spectrometer in 2017 for drug testing at festivals like Shambhala and Bass Coast.

The recent debut of the Regina Exchange Folk Festival emphasized the importance of harm reduction and safety measures. Zandra Kaszas, the festival’s artistic director, highlighted the proactive approach taken to ensure attendee safety, including security, hydration stations, medical support, and a naloxone station provided by the Nēwo Yōtina Friendship Centre.

Tupper emphasized the significance of drug testing services in offering individuals a sense of certainty before consuming drugs, potentially saving lives through informed decision-making and counseling support. The research project also aims to document the harm reduction strategies employed at festivals, recognizing the value of this information for future discussions and initiatives in the field.
