In an exciting development, Jeremy Hansen’s groundbreaking voyage on the Artemis II mission is about to be chronicled in a new book slated for release this autumn.
Titled “Earthrise: A Canadian Astronaut’s Journey into Deep Space,” the book will offer Hansen’s unique perspective as the first Canadian to venture into deep space. The author of the book is John Larsen, a former high-ranking military public affairs officer.
During the Artemis II mission, the crew set a new record for the farthest distance traveled from Earth, capturing the attention and admiration of Canadians. This marked the first crewed lunar mission in over half a century.
The Artemis II team comprised Hansen, along with NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch. Throughout the 10-day mission, the astronauts conducted various tests on systems, including communication via NASA’s Deep Space Network (DSN), and explored the effects of space travel on the human body.
Although the crew did not land, Hansen made history as the first Canadian and non-American to journey to the moon. They also witnessed parts of the moon never seen by human eyes before.
Hansen expressed his thoughts on the mission in a press release, highlighting the mission’s reflection of human potential in space exploration and innovation.
The book “Earthrise” will delve into Hansen’s extensive training, his journey to becoming an astronaut, and the lunar mission that propelled him into deep space. Hansen shared his excitement, comparing the experience to childhood dreams of space adventures.
Earlier this year, Hansen announced his retirement from the Canadian Space Agency after serving in the military for 32 years and working as an astronaut for 17 years.
Larsen, a writer and university instructor based in Calgary, conducted in-depth interviews with Hansen for the book. He described the narrative as a tale of personal accomplishment, national pride, and the pursuit of individual aspirations.
“Earthrise: A Canadian Astronaut’s Journey into Deep Space” will be published by HarperCollinsCanada and is scheduled for release on October 27, 2026.
