A United States judge has authorized the Justice Department to disclose grand jury records related to the criminal case against Ghislaine Maxwell, who is currently incarcerated for the trafficking of underage girls with the late Jeffrey Epstein.
U.S. District Judge Paul Engelmayer in New York has approved the Justice Department’s plea to unseal the documents as per a recent legislation mandating the release of all declassified files linked to investigations of Epstein and Maxwell. Last week, a Florida judge issued a similar directive in Epstein’s case.
The unveiling of these records is eagerly anticipated by both critics of President Donald Trump and his supporters, all of whom are seeking increased transparency in the government’s inquiries. These documents could potentially offer more insights into Epstein’s connections with influential individuals, including Trump.
Although Trump initially opposed releasing the files, he later changed his stance just before the approval of the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which he subsequently signed. Trump had distanced himself from Epstein well before the latter’s arrest in 2019 and has maintained that he had no involvement with Epstein’s illegal activities.
A significant portion of Trump’s supporters believe that his administration has concealed Epstein’s associations with powerful figures and obscured details surrounding Epstein’s death in a Manhattan prison in 2019, where he was awaiting trial for federal sex trafficking charges. The official cause of Epstein’s death was ruled a suicide.
The Epstein scandal has lingered as a persistent issue for Trump, who has previously propagated conspiracy theories about Epstein and promised to release the files. However, he now characterizes the demands for disclosure as a Democratic ploy to divert attention from his administration’s achievements.
Ghislaine Maxwell is presently serving a 20-year prison term subsequent to her conviction in 2021 for child sex trafficking and related offenses, despite maintaining her innocence. In a conversation with a senior Justice Department official in July, Maxwell asserted that she never witnessed any inappropriate behavior by Trump.
