Regina to Host 2027 Grey Cup for Second Time

Date:

Regina will host the Grey Cup game in 2027, marking the second time in five years that the CFL final will take place in the capital city and home of the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

During the announcement on Monday, Premier Scott Moe emphasized the opportunity to showcase the strong fan base and community pride in Saskatchewan for the football team.

Craig Reynolds, the president of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, attributed the successful bid for the 2027 Grey Cup to the support received from the City of Regina and the province.

According to a spokesperson for Regina Mayor Chad Bachynski, the City of Regina has committed $1.5 million in cash and in-kind contributions, including services like transit shuttle and police support, for the Grey Cup event.

“In Saskatchewan, we know how to host Grey Cups properly,” Reynolds expressed confidently.

Bachynski assured that whether attendees are longtime fans or first-time visitors, they will be welcomed like family in Regina during the 2027 Grey Cup.

Expectations are high for the Roughriders hosting the Grey Cup in their hometown, with the upcoming 2027 game scheduled for November 7, a week earlier than usual, and it will be the fifth championship held in Regina and the second at the new Mosaic Stadium.

The Riders have previously hosted the championship game four times, with the most recent occasion being in 2022. The anticipation is building for the 2027 event, as the Roughriders aim to replicate the success of their 2013 victory on home turf.

Currently, the 2021 Grey Cup is set to take place in Winnipeg on November 16, while Calgary is preparing to host the event in 2026.

CFL Commissioner Stewart Johnston commended the collaborative effort put forth by the Saskatchewan Roughriders, the province, the City of Regina, and local hotel operators in their bid for the 2027 Grey Cup, emphasizing the strong football culture in Saskatchewan.

Notably, the 2027 Grey Cup festival will be held entirely indoors for the first time, including the street festival, providing attendees the convenience of enjoying the event without needing winter attire.

Johnston praised the exceptional bid package from Saskatchewan, highlighting its quality, thoughtful approach, and widespread support.
