The NHL has decided to suspend Mitch Love for the rest of the season following an investigation triggered by allegations that emerged during his interviews for various head-coaching positions across the league.
Simultaneously, the Washington Capitals terminated Love’s employment. Love had been an assistant under coach Spencer Carbery for the past two years and was put on leave last month pending the investigation. No specifics regarding the investigation have been disclosed.
In a statement, the Capitals emphasized their dedication to upholding the highest standards of behavior and responsibility. Love’s departure from the team was effective immediately, and he had been absent since the development camp in July.
The NHL stated that Love’s suspension was due to conduct deemed harmful to the league, pending a thorough investigation. Love may seek reinstatement for the 2026-27 season, subject to specific conditions.
Love, aged 41 as of June, was considered a strong contender for coaching roles, including potential openings in Pittsburgh and Seattle. He previously served as the head coach for the Calgary Flames’ American Hockey League affiliate from 2021 to 2023 before joining the Washington Capitals.
