Over 100 individuals, including children and pets, sought shelter in a community hall basement for the second consecutive night as red tornado warnings flashed on their mobile devices on Saturday evening. Chris Stewart recounted the experience of being in Aquadeo, Sask., during dinner when the fire alarm prompted another evacuation. Aquadeo is situated 40 kilometers north of the Battlefords on Jackfish Lake. Stewart mentioned that despite initial concerns from some children, everyone remained composed as they gathered in the hall’s basement, with over 100 people present on both occasions.
Several communities in west-central Saskatchewan, such as Turtleford, Glaslyn, Medstead, Edam, Paynton, Rabbit Lake, and Spiritwood, were placed under tornado warnings on Friday and Saturday by Environment Canada due to a slow-moving system colliding with another system from Alberta. Meteorologist Kyle Ziolkowski noted that while such weather events are relatively uncommon, they are not out of the ordinary.
Severe weather conditions ravaged Saskatchewan on Saturday, with heavy rainfall, hail ranging from ping-pong to golf ball size near Neilburg, and wind gusts up to 90 km/h near North Battleford. Although no tornado touchdowns were confirmed by Environment Canada on Saturday, Friday saw a different story unfold. Shannon Risling recounted witnessing a tornado touching down near Jackfish Lake with her daughter, prompting her to contact Environment Canada.
Looking ahead, Ziolkowski mentioned a forecast of high-pressure ridge and calmer weather returning to the Prairies in the upcoming week. By Sunday morning, Stewart was back out on the water enjoying clear skies and a day of fishing, grateful for the improved conditions.
