Singer Bonnie Tyler has passed away at a hospital in Portugal, as confirmed by an announcement on her social media platforms. She was 75 years old. The Grammy-nominated artist underwent emergency intestinal surgery in early May in Faro, Portugal, where she resided. Subsequently, she was placed in a medically induced coma for several weeks.
Her family revealed in a statement that Tyler unexpectedly passed away on Wednesday night. Known for her distinctive raspy voice, Tyler gained fame with the 1983 power ballad “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” which topped charts in Canada, the U.K., and the Billboard Hot 100. This song, along with the album it originated from, “Faster Than the Speed of Night,” earned her a Grammy nomination in 1984.
Hailing from Wales and born as Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, Tyler achieved her first No. 1 hit in Canada in 1978 with “It’s A Heartache.” Welsh First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth expressed condolences, calling her a true icon whose music brought joy to many.
Tyler’s musical career continued until her recent passing, with scheduled performances canceled following her surgery in May.
