Marc Messier, a well-known figure in Quebec’s cultural realm, has passed away after a short illness at the age of 78. His agency has confirmed his death. Throughout his career in acting, spanning film, television, and theater, Messier garnered widespread acclaim. Described as beloved by audiences, he connected with people of all ages through his sincerity, humor, and compelling performances, as stated by Agence Goodwin.
One of Messier’s notable achievements was co-writing and performing in the play “Broue” alongside his longtime partners Marcel Gauthier and Michel Côté. The play, consisting of a series of sketches, propelled Messier into the spotlight in 1979. It depicted the humorous interactions of ordinary men at a tavern, sharing their woes over a beer. Over a span of 35 years, “Broue” was staged more than 3,000 times, entertaining over 3,300,000 spectators.
Aside from his theatrical endeavors, Messier made a mark in television, starting with his breakthrough role in “Lance et compte.” His success on the small screen continued with his portrayal of Réjean in “La Petite Vie.” Additionally, he gained recognition for his role in the popular film series “Les Boys.”
Tributes for Messier started flowing in on Tuesday, including heartfelt messages from Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette. Fréchette expressed deep sadness over Messier’s passing, acknowledging him as an outstanding actor and artist who significantly influenced Quebec’s cultural landscape. She praised Messier for his ability to evoke laughter, emotions, and unity through his performances, noting that his legacy will endure in collective memory.
Fréchette also requested that the Quebec flag at the Parliament Building be flown at half-mast during Messier’s funeral. Prime Minister Mark Carney joined in expressing condolences, recognizing Messier’s profound impact on Quebec’s theater, television, and cinema scenes. Carney extended sympathies to Messier’s family and all those who admired him. Messier is survived by his immediate family, including his three children.
