Kenny Chaplin is determined to regain his Guinness World Record for the most trees planted by a single person within 24 hours. His initial victory in 2001 saw him plant 15,170 trees near Prince Albert, Sask., a record he held for two decades until it was surpassed by a competitor. Now, Chaplin is on a mission to reclaim his title.
His ambitious plan involves transforming a flat field near Buena Vista, Sask., located approximately 40 kilometers northwest of Regina, into a burgeoning forest within a 24-hour window starting at 8 a.m. CST on June 30 and ending at 8 a.m. CST on July 1. Chaplin expressed his excitement for the project, aiming to plant 24,000 trees within the timeframe to achieve his goal.
Reflecting on the trees he planted for his previous record, Chaplin takes pride in seeing them thrive over the years. He envisions the new jack pine seedlings he will plant this year maturing into a lush forest that will benefit future generations in Buena Vista. The community is expected to receive a communal forest, featuring walking paths, hiking trails, and serene spots for relaxation.
The current record holder, Antoine Moses, set the bar high by planting 23,060 trees in La Crete, Alberta, on July 17, 2021, utilizing artificial light and a dedicated team to assist him throughout the day and night. Chaplin acknowledged the increased competitiveness in the tree-planting realm and is prepared for his attempt with the support of his twin brother and dedicated volunteers.
To ensure the validity of his record-breaking endeavor, Chaplin will have independent professionals, including foresters, arborists, and botanists, as witnesses. Multiple cameras will be in place to document the planting process meticulously for Guinness World Records verification. David Tonken, president of Let’s Plant Trees Ltd., commended Chaplin’s endeavor as a significant effort highlighting the importance of tree planting and the dedication of those involved in forest rehabilitation annually.
