Meta Faces Backlash for Controversial Instagram AI Feature

Date:

Instagram users have commonly utilized various filters and techniques to enhance their photos, so it was not unexpected when Meta, the parent company of Instagram, introduced new generative AI effects to elevate content creation. However, following criticism, Meta has retracted a significant feature of the new tool.

Just days after its launch, Meta disabled a feature that enabled AI users to tag an Instagram account and have the system generate images incorporating pictures from that account. Users on Instagram would need to actively opt out to prevent others from utilizing their content for photo generation, a feature that was not widely known.

In response to feedback, Meta spokesperson announced the removal of the feature, acknowledging that it missed the mark. The Muse Image tool, offering over 30 new effects for Instagram stories and WhatsApp, has been introduced by Meta. The tool is set to expand to Facebook and Messenger in the future.

Despite the innovation behind Muse Image, it sparked concerns. The feature is currently only accessible for Instagram Stories and WhatsApp in the U.S., with Canadians able to explore some features directly on the Meta AI website. Notably, users with public accounts outside the U.S. were automatically enrolled in Meta AI permissions, including those in Canada, necessitating manual opting out.

As of the latest update, Meta had not addressed the potential return of the controversial Instagram tagging feature. Users and privacy experts quickly raised objections and shared instructions on how to opt out of the feature. Ethical Digital’s founder, Katrina German, emphasized the importance of consent in image use and expressed concern over the potential misuse of the feature.

To disable the Muse Image feature and Meta AI permissions, users must navigate to their mobile device settings. The permissions can be found in the “Sharing and reuse” section, where users can toggle off permissions related to content reuse and creation with Meta AI.

Concerns arise from the potential misuse of generated images and the need for manual opt-out measures. The tool allows for creative image editing, including personalized creations and playful edits, which can be shared on Instagram stories. However, the tool’s capabilities raise privacy and consent issues, particularly for public figures and parents of young children.

Meta’s collection of user data for AI training purposes has been ongoing, raising privacy concerns. The company has implemented technical safeguards, but the need for manual opt-outs prompts caution. Other platforms have faced similar challenges with AI image tools, emphasizing the importance of privacy safeguards and user consent in AI development.
