“PEI Premier Urges Federal Probe of Buddhist Groups”

Date:

Prince Edward Island’s Premier, Rob Lantz, has urged the federal RCMP and Canada’s anti-money-laundering agency to initiate immediate and transparent investigations into allegations of foreign interference and money laundering linked to specific Buddhist groups on the Island. The call for further scrutiny follows comments made during a recent press conference in Ottawa by a former solicitor general and an ex-RCMP superintendent, hinting at the existence of information that could necessitate a criminal inquiry.

Lantz emphasized the need for clarity and separation between fact and fiction, stressing that Islanders are seeking answers amidst growing concerns. The Premier’s office recently dispatched letters to RCMP Commissioner Michael Duheme and FINTRAC CEO Sarah Paquet, urging them to probe longstanding allegations concerning two particular Buddhist groups based in eastern P.E.I.

The letters highlight serious allegations of potential foreign interference, including claims that Prince Edward Island has been utilized as a front for the Chinese Communist Party. The Premier underscored the importance of handling such matters through established legal processes rather than speculation, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

In response to the Premier’s request, GEBIS, one of the implicated Buddhist organizations, welcomed the call for a transparent investigation by the federal authorities. The group expressed relief at steps being taken to address unfounded accusations and pledged full cooperation with the investigative process.

Amidst mounting concerns, the Town of Three Rivers voiced support for the federal investigation, citing the importance of transparency and accountability in upholding public trust. Legislators and officials in the region, including Minister Darlene Compton, have echoed the need for a thorough investigation to address the community’s apprehensions.

As the probe unfolds, Premier Lantz emphasized the government’s commitment to collaborating with federal agencies to ensure a comprehensive investigation. He urged patience and trust in the authorities’ investigative process, emphasizing the goal of providing Islanders with clarity and maintaining a welcoming environment on Prince Edward Island.
